25 in 24

November 6, 2015 — Jon Foreman

"This year, I had a crazy birthday wish: to play 25 shows in 24 hours. To play 75+ of these songs of death and birth a few days after my birthday. "

Time is a funny dance- it moves slow and fast all at once. Seconds can last for hours and the years can fly by. Some seasons are frozen in my mind and other years disappear as if they had never happened. Maybe that’s why we humans do odd things to punctuate the time. We build pyramids and statues, we hide painted eggs and carve pumpkins. Or we have midlife crises and buy shiny cars. Maybe we’re looking for punctuation- trying to mark the seasons. Or maybe we’re longing for meaning, something that will remind us of the blood in our veins, and the fight in our heart…

We’re looking for a monument. Not quite a tombstone. And yet, we want something more substantial than just candles and cake once a year. Maybe we’re looking for validation. Maybe we’re looking for something lasting, for the affirmation that life is precious and awkward, and extravagant and tragic, and wonderful and strange.

And passing.

So we blow out the candles and make our wish. And keep silent. And hope…

This year, I had a crazy birthday wish: to play 25 shows in 24 hours. To play 75+ of these songs of death and birth a few days after my birthday. To play these songs with strangers and friends and family all over my hometown. Completely unrehearsed. I wanted to embrace the chaos of the human experience, the right notes and the wrong ones- the awkwardness of life on this planet.

The superstition is this: If you tell anyone what you wished for while you’re blowing out the candles it won’t come true. So we cover up our dreams. We hide them from year to year, covered up in frosting and hallmark greeting cards. But I’m not worried about the superstition- whether or not these wishes will come true: Because for me it already has…

So talk about your wishes. Say them out loud. Dream them up with friends. Celebrate this passing life with a crazy journey of your own. And I’ll meet you in The Wonderlands- that space between chaos and control.

Thanks to everyone who took the journey with me. The Wonderlands was more than I ever imagined it would be.

To bobby, keith, aaron, tim, chad, jerome, drew, sean, tyler, daisy, emily, and everyone else who dreamt this thing up with me- thanks for the best birthday present ever!
