THE GRAMMYS: 6 YEARS AGO TODAY

The first time I went to the Grammys, I ran out of gas. Actually, WE ran out of gas. Which is even worse, because I was the one driving. My brother and I had driven up to LA with our wives for our first Grammy nomination, and we'd lost. And then driving back from LA, I thought we could make it home without stopping for gas. I REALLY thought we could make it. And we almost did. In fact, we made it to within a couple miles from our house. But a couple miles feels like a long way from home when it's 2:00 in the morning and you've got a borrowed suit and shoes, and a brother who's facial expression says "I told you so." And for the record, he DID tell me we would run out out of gas... but I REALLY thought we could make it!

Anyway, our second trip to the Grammys was better. This time, we won the Grammy, spent the night at a hotel up in LA, and even managed to drive home the next day without running out of gas. That was 6 years ago today, for an album called Hello Hurricane, which was our attempt to sing into the storms of life. That album would not have been possible without the storms that surrounded us during that time. So here's to the storms! Here's to running out of gas at 2 AM (and things far more painful), because they can lead to beautiful things, if we let them. The wound if where the light shines through.
